CURBSIDE GARBAGE AND REYCLING COLLECTION PROGRAM

Garbage and Recycling Calendar for 2006 (Click here)

Montville Township has a contract with Waste Management (973-383-7480 x242) for the curbside collection of garbage, recyclables and vegetative waste. Collections under the contract will be for all single-family and condominium homes in the Township. The cost of curbside collection services is included in your property taxes. You are no longer obligated to pay a collector directly.

The Township is divided into two (2) collection sections. Section 1 is the northern area of town. Parts of town which are north of River Road, west of Changebridge Road and north of Route 202 are located in Section 1. The remainder of the Township is located in Section 2. One exception to the sections is that the Changebridge At Montville community will be included with Section 1.

Collections are to be made between 6 a.m. and sunset on the designated days. Residents can place materials at the curb for collection on the preceding evening. All materials for collection should be placed adjacent to the curb (edge of the road), but not within the roadway. Materials not placed within a close proximity to the curb will not be collected. The collection services to be provided are as follows:

GARBAGE: Collections for Section 1 shall be on Monday and Thursday and Section 2 shall be on Tuesday and Friday. Residents can place up to three 35-gallon containers of household garbage at the curb on each of their scheduled days for collection. Condominiums that presently have collection by dumpsters will continue in the same manner.

RECYCLABLES: The collection schedule for recyclables has been changed. Starting January 1, 2006, paper recyclables will be collected every other Wednesday, with commingled recyclables collected on alternating Wednesdays. No longer do you have to wonder if it is the 2nd or 3rd Wednesday. Simply look to see which recycling bin is closer to being full. You may also click here to view the Garbage/Recycling calendar on the Township website or check your Town Planner calendar.

Recyclable materials are to be commingled as follows:

The following recyclable materials are to be commingled in the same container: aluminum food and beverage containers, glass bottles and jars (all colors), ferrous containers (steel and bi-metal cans), and plastic bottles (#1 or #2 printed on the bottom). REMOVE ALL BOTTLE CAPS AND DISPOSE OF WITH GARBAGE.

Newspapers are to be placed in containers with other recyclable paper or can be tied in bundles. Do not use paper or plastic bags to contain newspapers or any other recyclables. Telephone books are to be considered solid waste and discarded with household garbage.

The following paper materials are to be commingled in the same container: corrugated cardboard, magazines, mixed paper (junk mail), and newspaper. (Newspapers should be tied in bundles).

Residents are to provide their own containers for recyclables, which are to be a garbage can-type container, with handles, maximum size of 35 gallons. Condominiums that presently have collection of recyclables by dumpsters will continue in the same manner.

BULK WASTE: Curbside collections for bulk waste shall be on the same days scheduled for solid waste collection. On the scheduled days, residents can place at the curbs items such as home furnishings, carpeting, and other oversized items. Excluded from bulk waste collections are building materials, automotive parts, and white goods. Residents with large quantities of bulk waste for collection are requested to use multiple collection days rather than placing large quantities of materials at the curb for one collection.

WHITE GOODS: “White goods,” which are defined as ferrous household appliances to include refrigerators, freezers, stoves, washing machines, clothes dryers, and dishwashers, are to be collected on the second collection day of the week. White goods are to be placed at the curb for collection on the designated day with all doors removed so as to avoid entrapment within the appliance.

GRASS CLIPPINGS, BRUSH AND LEAF COLLECTIONS (Vegetative Waste): The collection of grass clippings, brush, and leaves is limited to single-family residential homes only, with the exception of Christmas Trees. Collection of vegetative waste for Sections 1 and 2 shall be on the second pickup day of the week (Thursday for Section 1 and Friday for Section 2), April through December. Last collection of brush and leaves will be December 29, 2006.

Grass, leaves and yard clippings can be placed in rigid containers (garbage can-type) or biodegradable bags. Rigid containers must not exceed 35 gallons in capacity or 50 pounds in weight. Residents can purchase biodegradable bags (paper only) at many area stores including, but not limited to, Anchor Supply, Condurso's Garden Center, Fairfield Garden Center, Home Depot, Lincoln Park Hardware, Pathmark, Sears, and Shop Rite. Plastic bags, including those marked "biodegradable," cannot be used for any vegetative waste.

Brush can be bundled for collection with the maximum bundle size being two feet in diameter, four feet in length and weighing 50 pounds, and properly tied so that each bundle can be handled by one person.

Residents with large quantities of yard waste for collection are requested to use multiple collection days rather than placing large quantities of materials at the curb for one single collection.

Christmas trees will be picked up at curbside on Friday, January 6, 2006 and Friday, January 13, 2006. All ornaments, decorations and tinsel must be removed from the trees. Trees cannot be placed in plastic bags. Christmas trees will also be collected from condominium and townhouse units on the same dates.

Oil can be taken to any gas station; tires can be taken to an approved tire disposal facility; construction materials must be disposed of at the Morris County Transfer Station.
