Xeriscaping is landscaping for water conservation. The greatest waste of water in New Jersey is watering grass. Most of us do not need as much grass as we have. Less grass means less work, and conserves more water.

Some Xeriscaping ideas include:

  • Choose plants that are native to the area that are drought resistant.
  • Reduce the square footage of lawn by planting more shrubs, trees and ground cover.
  • Incorporate a variety of textures in your garden – rock beds, mulch, and wooded areas – these all conserve water.
  • Mulch around trees as well as in flower beds.
  • Use drip irrigation instead of lawn sprinklers.
